For many generations, Kevin’s family farmed shorthorn cattle and made maple syrup along the river beside Henry Cargill’s old lumber mills in Cargill, Ontario. Kevin’s great-great grandfather imported fine horses from England while his father worked as a guard at Buckingham Palace.
When he was young, Kevin’s grandmother Florence would collect a few empty pop bottles and take him to the Cargill general store to buy a piece of candy. Kevin’s mother Marilyn Pegelo went from making her own clothes on the farm to becoming the first female doctor in the nearby town of Walkerton.
In 2021 Kevin and his wife Sue, high school sweethearts, returned from their professional careers in Toronto to explore a different passion – the world of art. Months later they completed the transformation of an abandoned historic storefront into The Mill Pond Gallery to showcase and celebrate the beautiful work of the many talented local artists of this part of rural Ontario.
Named for Henry Cargill, Cargill is a magical village with a rich pioneering industrial history that can be explored in the Cargill Museum. In the back of the Gallery is the Bruce County Bookstore, home to the largest selection of books on Bruce County. In the summer, outside the Gallery, you can enjoy the finest Central Smith Ice Cream while taking in the view from the riverside patio at The Mill Pond Cafe & Eatery.
